5 Medications that Can Cause Suicide

Medications can come with a number of warnings about their possible side effects including suicide and birth defects. Suicidal thoughts or actions can be common side effects of a number of medications, including antidepressants and the medications that are used to treat epilepsy. Thoughts of suicide can easily lead to the actual commission of the action, or at least the attempt of it. If you take a medicine that has this side effect and have a history of suicide attempts, or if you start considering committing suicide, talk to your doctor immediately. There are most likely other medications that you can take that will not cause you to feel suicidal.

Here is a list of some medications that have been linked to suicide.

1. Antidepressants

Antidepressants have long been linked to causing suicidal thoughts in the patients they are supposed to be helping. Paxil and Prozac are two specific medications that have been linked to suicide. One possible explanation for this link could be that fatigue is one of the major symptoms of depression. While it can take a few weeks of medication for other depression symptoms to improve, antidepressants give patients an energy boost early on. It is theorized that they use this extra energy to act on suicidal thoughts.

2. Chantix

Chantix is a drug that is used to help people stop smoking. It works by blocking the pleasure areas of the brain that make nicotine so enjoyable for smokers. Unfortunately, Chantix seems to block other types of pleasure and happiness, and this can lead to depression. Since this medication also helps patients quit smoking, this could be another factor in their depression. Smoking is also considered to be a suicide risk factor. Anyone who is considering trying Chantix is urged to consult their doctor and learn what they can expect as they stop smoking.

3. Singulair

Singulair is a drug that is used to treat asthma. Its chemical pathway is similar to that of steroids, which are known to cause changes in a patient’s mood or behavior. These alterations could potentially cause patients to start considering suicide. This link has not yet been proven though, so if you have any concerns about using Singulair, you should talk to your doctor right away.

4. Acne Medication

The prescription acne medication, isotretinoin—also known as Accutane, has been linked to suicidal thoughts and actions. If patients are thinking about committing suicide, it is much more likely that they could act on their thoughts. If you have any concerns about taking this or any other medication, you should consult your doctor.

5. Atomoxetine

Atomoxetine is a drug that is used to treat children who live with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which is more commonly known as ADHD. This medication has been linked to such side effects as suicidal thoughts and actions, depression, aggressiveness, and panic attacks. These side effects may become worse when the medication is adjusted. If your child has a history of dangerous behavior or self-inflicted harm, you should express your concerns to your doctor.
